Mr. Derrick Edwards is a Site Development Manager for Ericsson and has a successful career for over 20 years building wireless networks across the United States. He also owns a successful Bail Bonds Company in Charlotte NC for over 10 yrs. Derrick made a promise that once his son Garrett achieved his 1st degree he would start karate with Mr. Carder. After much work and dedication, Mr. Edwards earned his 1st degree black belt in October 2017 and is currently pursuing a 2nd degree black belt. His son Garrett studied under Mr. Carder since he was 5 years old and is working on his 3rd degree black belt. One fun fact about Mr. Edwards is that he is a North Carolina native. He graduated from Independence High School and currently lives in Charlotte. He was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member in January 2019.
Professor Paulo “Mushu” Elsimaani is a 5th degree Black Belt and World Champion in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ). He is the Head BJJ Professor/ Coach at CheckMat North Carolina. He started BJJ at 16 years old under Professor Rillion Gracie. Soon after Mushu moved to Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and began training with one of the Grandmasters, Carlson Gracie’s Black Belts, Fernando Pinduka. After many years of training and competing, he was rewarded with his Brown Belt and relocated to New York with his family. He continued his training with Roni Cardosa, an Alliance Black Belt under Fabio Gurgel. In 1999, he became a Certified BJJ Black Belt under Jacare Cavalcanti.

Mr. Brooks Dover has been training in the martial arts for over 10 years. Mr. Dover started at 6 years old where he trained under Master Instructor Glenn Carder at BCCA Karate Club. In April 2013, he earned his first degree black belt. In 2013, he continued his training at the Harrisburg location under Chief Master Instructor Hardly Soryz. In October 2014, he earned his second degree and then third degree in April 2016. Also in 2016, Mr. Dover earned a first degree black belt in Kubodo Cane. He currently is a Certified Instructor. In October 2018, he was promoted to fourth degree. He teaches at the Harrisburg school location, BCCA Karate Club, and Nomad Karate Club. He is a high school student at Back Creek Christian Academy. He plans on furthering his education after high school with a focus on owning/ managing multiple karate locations.
Mr. Dave Skolarus, a retired Air Force Major, had a 46 year flying career in both the US Army and the Air Force, finishing his career flying high profile charters for NetJets. He has a broad instructor background teaching military and civilian commercial pilots and teaching and mentoring high school students in one of our poorest NC counties.
Dave has studied under Mr. Glenn Carder since 2015 and has achieved a 1st Degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate. In March 2018, after much training, he broadened his knowledge and became a Certified Instructor in Tai Chi/ Qigong with Dayan Arts. He is currently pursuing his 2nd degree. He is also the Program Director for MATI Clubs LLC.
Eric Clark started his karate training at the age of 6 in 2009 under Master Instructor Glenn Carder at the BCCA Karate Club location. He participated as a member of the BCCA Karate Demo Team in 2013 and 2014. On October 18, 2014, Mr. Clark earned his first degree black belt. He has continued his training and is expected to earn his second degree black belt in April 2018. Mr. Clark is an Instructor at both the BCCA Karate Club and Nomad Karate Club locations. He is a high school student at Back Creek Christian Academy. His academic interests includes History and Law Enforcement.
Mr. Andy Farley is a 3rd degree Black Belt Instructor and has been training for over 8 years. He also has a 1st degree Black Belt in Kubudo Cane. He started his journey in the Harrisburg MATI school location. He started with MATI Clubs and with Mr. Carder January 2019. He has been successfully instructing children and adults for years and he is a wonderful addition to the MATI Clubs organization. Additionally, he is trained in Bo/ staff and Balintawak Arnis.
Mr. Jay Myers is a United States Marine Corps veteran and earned the rank of sergeant. It was in the Marine Corps where he learned hand-to-hand combat techniques representing various martial art styles. Following his service, Mr. Myers continued his training by studying Ed Parker Kenpo. In February of 2015, he began studying under Mr. Glenn Carder of the Martial Arts Training Institute. In October of 2017, Mr. Myers earned his first degree black belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate and is currently working on his second degree. Professionally, Mr. Myers is a Captain for the Charlotte Fire Department with 20 years of service. His two sons, Garrett and Jack, are also first degree black belts.
