Our Instructors


Mr. Jay Myers

Mr. Jay Myers is a United States Marine Corps veteran and earned the rank of sergeant. It was in the Marine Corps where he learned hand-to-hand combat techniques representing various martial arts styles. Following his service, Mr. Myers continued his training by studying Ed Parker Kenpo. In February of 2015, he began studying under Mr. Glenn Carder of the Martial Arts Training Institute. In October of 2017, Mr. Myers earned his first-degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate. He earned and was awarded his second-degree Black Belt and elevated to Certified Instructor in October 2019. Professionally, Mr. Myers is a Captain for the Charlotte Fire Department with over 20 years of service.

Mr. Andy Farley

Mr. Andy Farley is a 4th degree Black Belt Instructor and has been training since 2009. He started training in the Harrisburg MATI school location under Master Instructor Hardly Soryz. He is lead instructor with MATI Clubs and has been with Mr. Carder since January 2019. He has been successfully instructing children and adults for years and he is a wonderful addition to the MATI Clubs organization. He also has a 1st degree Black Belt in Kubodo Cane. Additionally, he is trained in Bo/staff and Balintawak Arnis. He is continuing his education with a coal of a degree in electrical engineering.

Mr. Dave Skolarus

Mr. Dave Skolarus, a retired Air Force Major, had a 46 year flying career in both the US Army and the Air Force, finishing his career flying high profile charters for NetJets. He has a broad instructor background teaching military and civilian commercial pilots and teaching and mentoring high school students in one of our poorest NC counties. Dave has studied under Mr. Glenn Carder since 2015 and has achieved a 1st Degree Black Belt in Shorinji Kempo Karate. In March 2018, after much training, he broadened his knowledge and became a Certified Instructor in Tai Chi/ Qigong with Dayan Arts. He is currently pursuing his 2nd degree. He is also the Program Director for MATI Clubs LLC.

Mr. Derrick Edwards

Mr. Derrick Edwards is a Site Development Manager for Ericsson and has a successful career for over 20 years building wireless networks across the United States. He also owns a successful Bail Bonds Company in Charlotte NC for over 10 yrs. Derrick made a promise that once his son Garrett achieved his 1st degree he would start karate with Mr. Carder. After much work and dedication, Mr. Edwards earned his 1st degree black belt in October 2017 and is currently pursuing a 2nd degree black belt.  His son Garrett studied under Mr. Carder since he was 5 years old and is working on his 3rd degree black belt. One fun fact about Mr. Edwards is that he is a North Carolina native.  He graduated from Independence High School and currently lives in Charlotte.  He was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member in January 2019.

Mr. Eric Clark

Eric Clark started his karate training at the age of 6 in 2009 under Master Instructor Glenn Carder at the BCCA Karate Club location. He was a member of the BCCA Karate Demo Team in 2013 and 2014. On October 18, 2014, Mr. Clark earned his first-degree Black Belt. He continued his training, earned and was rewarded his second-degree black belt in April 2018 and third-degree Black Belt in October 2019. Mr. Clark is a Certified Instructor at the Nomad Karate

Miss Courtney Blacker

Miss Courtney Blacker began her martial arts training in January 2015 under Master Instructor Glenn Carder. She earned her 1st degree Black Belt in April of 2018. She is expected to test for her 2nd degree in October 2020. She was promoted to Instructor in December 2019. She is the Lead Instructor for our Homeschool classes on Wednesdays/ Fridays  and assists with Thursday evening classes at the MATI Clubs Nomad location. She is currently in high school. She is very passionate for children with special needs and serves weekly as a “one-on-one buddy” alongside a child with Autism. After high school, she plans to further her education by studying Applied Behavior and Child Development specifically pursuing a career in the special needs field. She is a wonderful addition to our organization.

Miss Danielle Kallaur

Miss Danielle Kallaur started karate in the fall of 2015. She got her 1st degree Black Belt in April of 2018, 2nd degree in October of 2019 and is aiming to get her 3rd degree in October of 2020. She was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member in 2019 and Instructor level in January 2020. She is very passionate about martial arts, especially wrestling, kickboxing, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. She is currently in high school and is planning on becoming a translator for the U.S. government in Russian & Chinese.

Mr. Timothy Roberts

Mr. Timothy Roberts is an Instructor/ staff member for Master Instructor Glenn Carder at the MATI Clubs Nomad location. He started his martial arts journey at 11 years old and is currently a 2nd degree Black Belt. He has been helping in an Assistant Instructor capacity for over three years at the MATI Clubs CCA and Nomad locations and was promoted to Instructor October 2019. He is a student at Mallard Creek High School and will be testing for his 3rd degree Black Belt and 1st degree Kubodo Cane in October 2020. He is a wonderful role model for our younger under belt and Jr. Black Belt students.

Mr. Mike Dziomba

Mr. Mike Dziomba began studying under Mr. Carder in 2014 after being encouraged by his son Jack to earn his Black Belt along side him. He earned his 1st degree Black Belt in April 2017 and his 2nd degree in April 2019. His son also has his 1st and 2nd degree Black Belts, and both are currently pursuing their 3rd degree and 1st degree in Kubodo Cane. Mr. Dziomba enjoys leading and developing others both professionally and personally. Professionally, he has been in the Financial Services Industry for over 25 years. He also enjoys coaching recreational baseball and developing kids to achieve success. He was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member/ Instructor in 2019 and leads the Monday evening Black Belt Class.

Mr. Ben Roberts

Mr. Ben Roberts, 2nd Degree Black Belt Instructor. He assists at the MATI Clubs CIS and Nomad locations. He was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member/ Instructor in 2019.

Dr. Sukumar Kamalasadan

Dr. Sukumar Kamalasadan is a Professor at the University of North Carolina Charlotte and has a successful career in research and teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels for over 20 years. He has also been directing research lab on power grid modernization for over 10 years. He completed his 1st degree Black Belt in October 2018 and is currently will earn his 2nd degree Black Belt October 2020. His son, Athul has been studying under Mr. Carder since he was 4 years old and will earn his 2nd degree Black Belt October 2020. Athul was an inspiration for Sukumar to join karate and pursuing it further towards the advanced degree curriculum. Sukumar and Athul are also working towards getting their 1st degree Black Belts in weapons including Kama, Nunchaku, Tonfa, and Bo/ staff. Other than karate, Sukumar enjoys playing Chess and outdoor activities. He was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member/ Instructor in 2019. He assists in our adult and Black Belt Classes.

Ms. Karrie Miller

Ms. Karrie Miller began her martial arts journey in 2008 with Okinawan Shorin-ryu karate. She was thrilled to join MATI Clubs to study Shorinji Kempo karate under Mr. Glenn Carder. She earned her 1st degree Black Belt in October 2018 and is currently training for 2nd degree as well as pursuing 1st degrees in various kubodo (weapons). She assists in the adult and Black Belt classes at MATI Clubs Nomad. She was promoted to a MATI Clubs staff member/ Instructor in 2019. When not at the dojo, Ms. Miller is a proposal management professional who has secured more than $1 billion in architectural/engineering/construction contracts during the past decade.

Professor Paulo Elsimaani

Professor Paulo “Mushu” Elsimaani is a 5th degree Black Belt and World Champion in Brazilian Jiu-jitsu (BJJ). He is the Head BJJ Professor/ Coach at CheckMat North Carolina. He started BJJ at 16 years old under Professor Rillion Gracie. Soon after Mushu moved to Copacabana, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and began training with one of the Grandmasters, Carlson Gracie’s Black Belts, Fernando Pinduka. After many years of training and competing, he was rewarded with his Brown Belt and relocated to New York with his family. He continued his training with Roni Cardosa, an Alliance Black Belt under Fabio Gurgel. In 1999, he became a Certified BJJ Black Belt under Jacare Cavalcanti.
